Why it's important to store suitcases properly
Suitcases live in our flats far longer than they live on planes. Here's how to keep them clean, dry and ready — without losing a wardrobe to them.
Suitcases spend far more time at home than they ever do at the airport. Stored badly, they collect dust, get dented, develop a musty smell, and slowly eat half a wardrobe. Stored well, they sit out of sight, stay clean, and are ready the next time you fly.
What goes wrong when suitcases sit in a flat
- Damp and odour — closed bags trapped in warm cupboards can develop mildew, especially if put away with the last trip's clothes inside.
- Dust and discolouration — light-coloured shells turn grey near windows or on top of wardrobes.
- Dents and broken wheels — heavy items piled on top crack frames and snap handles.
- Wasted space — three nested suitcases easily take up a full metre of wardrobe depth.
How to store suitcases the right way
- Empty and clean — wipe interior and exterior, leave open for a day to fully dry before closing.
- Nest by size — small inside medium inside large. You save 60–70 % of the footprint.
- Add a moisture absorber — a small silica gel pack or activated charcoal sachet inside keeps the lining fresh.
- Cover the shell — a breathable cotton cover (not plastic) prevents dust and scuffs.
- Lift off the floor — a pallet, shelf or stand keeps wheels off cold concrete.
Why a storage cellar makes sense
A Mister Boxy cellar in Kirchberg is dry, clean, and stays at a stable temperature year-round. Even our smallest unit fits three nested suitcases plus a few seasonal boxes — and your wardrobe goes back to holding clothes instead of luggage.
Take the suitcase out the week before you fly, fill it at home, and bring it back when you're home. Your flat looks bigger every day of the year you're not packing.
